Sri Lanka Tea Exports for the Month of August 2017 was recorded at 24.8Mkgs which is a decrease of 1.34% when compared to the same period of the previous year. The FOB value at Rs.810.93 was Rs.180.56 above the FOB value of 2016. As a result the value of the Tea Exports for the month of August has exceeded by Rs.4.2 billion over the previous year. The tea export quantity for the first seven months of the year has recorded a 3.75% decrease. However recording a 25% increase in export earnings due to the higher FOB value by Rs. 189.60 when compared to the same period last year. Turkey has maintained its position as the leading importer of Sri Lanka Tea. The other Major importers of Sri Lanka Tea are Russia, Iraq and Iran. Whilst, other countries such as Libya, Azerbaijan, China, Japan and Chile lent useful support.
The Ex-Estate sale comprising of 0.66Mkgs met with good demand. A few select best teas in the Western High Grown category where quality was maintained appreciated following special inquiry. The better BOPs appreciated selectively whilst, the others maintained. Best BOPFs on offer gained as the sale progressed, whilst the price gap between the below best and plainer types narrowed further. A few Nuwara Eliya BOP/BOPFs on offer appreciated selectively. The UVA teas declined and some remained unsold whilst the others met with fair demand at lower levels. In the CTC category, the well – made PF1s from all elevations sold well, the BP1s were easier.
The 2.9 Mkgs of Low Growns teas that were on offer met with fair demand. In the Leafy category, Select best and best BOP1s were firm. Prices in the OP1 segment tended a little lower to last. OP/OPAs declined several rupees, following quality. Excellent demand prevailed for Pekoe/Pekoe1s. In the Small Leaf segment, well-made BOPs declined a few rupees. Select best BOPF/BOPF.SP and BOP.SPs maintained last levels. Select best FBOPs were irregularly easier, whilst the others declined a few rupees as the sale progressed. FBOPF1s met with lower demand to last. FBOPF varieties met with irregular demand. Select best Premium Flowery Teas continued to attract excellent demand whilst, the balance were irregularly lower, following quality.
