The Food & Beverage industry is a very important sector of Sri Lankan economy that contributes around 10% of the GDP and generate an annual export revenue of US$ 1.4 Bn.
However, SMEs in this industry are becoming less competitive due to increase in cost of production due to escalating cost of raw materials, energy, water and low compliance with international standards and safety regulations. The experts as well as industrialists have equally accepted that switching over to production practices, which ensures sustainable use of natural resources, is the best solution to successfully address these issues. The Promoting Sustainable Consumption & Production (SCP) to Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the Food & Beverage Industry Project supported by the European Union (EU) would build upon experiences of the past projects and aims to minimise the negative impact of industrial activities on the environmental and society by supporting SMEs in the Food & Beverage Industry to adopt best practices in sustainable consumption & production.
Therefore, the main objective of this unique project is to improve the performance of the Food & Beverage sector in Sri Lanka through promotion of cost - effective production techniques and best practices of sustainable production among SMEs.
