Sri Lanka Shippers Council visits Colombo South Harbour

Council members of Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council (SLSC) conducted a field visit to the Colombo South Harbour Development Project in order to familiarize themselves with the layout and the project work. A presentation made by Mr. K. M. T. B. Ganegoda, Project Engineer of the site provided a glimpse of the entire project.

Prior to the visit, a group of Council’s representatives met with Dr. Priyath B. Wickrama, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority to discuss various issues pertaining to the industry.

The Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council, the apex body representing of Sri Lankan Shippers, was established in March 1966 to protect and promote the interests of shippers. It was the first National Shippers’ Council set up in Asia, and now represents more than 70% of the import/export trade in the country.

Membership of the Council consist of Chambers of Commerce and Trade Associations and the Council has now opened its doors to individual companies as Associate Members so that companies in the import/export trade could gain access to the Council’s resources and expertise to resolve their shipping related issues. The Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council is also a founder member of the Association of Shippers’ Councils of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (ASCOBIPS) and the Asian Shippers’ Council.

The Council actively promotes the Sri Lankan Government’s vision of making the Colombo Port a competitive Maritime & Logistics hub in the Asian region, which would result in the generation of enhanced economic activity, employment and wealth.  As such all Council activities have been planned and prepared to support this vision.
